South Central Texas Chapter News

South Central Texas Chapter Penny San Marco 2006 closed out another very good year for this Chapter. The Annual Classic Car Show remains the biggest event we sponsor but we have many activities each year. And the past two years have seen some additions of Nights at the Drag Raceway and extra Cruise Nights. On September 16th the 7th Annual SCTC Classic Car Show was held. This year was the first time to hold the Show outside of San Antonio in the neighboring community of Seguin, TX. The Central Park Square behind the Courthouse downtown has many native pecan trees, a central fountain, and the City closes off the surrounding streets for the cars. It was a great success, 127 cars registered and we cleared $2,500 for our charities. Twenty five of our Club members worked very hard all day and the results were very gratifying. San Antonio has several Cruise Nites to choose from. The every Friday night at Biff Buzbys Restaurant, the 2nd Saturday every month in Castroville, TX, and the once a month at the FireHut @ Bandera Rd & Loop 1604. The Club periodically chooses a Cruise Nite to participate in as a Club group and 10 15 Pontiacs will Cruise to the spot together. The South Central Texas Chapter hosted a Buick/ Oldsmobile/Pontiac (BOP) Shootout that was held at the San Antonio Raceway (SAR) on Friday November 3, 2006. The SAR is located approximately 20 miles east of downtown San Antonio on IH-10 East and is a first class racing facility that holds IHRA and NHRA events throughout the year. The San Antonio POCI Chapter wanted to try and revive some of the good old BOP spirit that used to be on the streets years ago and held a race event to promote the BOP legends. Racing is Bracket format and cars do not have to be street legal. Many of the cars entered are not track only cars but daily drivers or street legal show cars. There was no prize money but various trophies were awarded. SAR provides all track officials, time slips, and determines winners. The event is currently limited to 50 cars maximum. This was a great opportunity to meet other BOP folks, see their cars, and take your car down the track a few times to see what it can really do, and have a ton of fun! The Chapter hosted an all Pontiac Shootout earlier in 2006 and it was a big success. We invite anyone interested in participating to attend either as a racer or just as a spectator to our drag events in 2007. Direct all email inquiries to dpelzel@satx.rr.com, event coordinator. SCTC meets the second Tuesday of each month at Momas Café in San Antonio north of Bitters Rd. on 281N access road at 7 PM.
